EXPERIENCES

Palermo and its monuments

An itinerary to discover the beauty of Palermo through its most significant monuments and places, situated in the heart of the historic center.

Starting from the focal point of the route, the magnificent Royal Palace with its splendid Palatine Chapel, we will cross the ancient Cassaro, the thoroughfare that divides the city into two sections and leads to the sea. We will discover squares and intersections, churches and palaces, among marbles, mosaics, frescoes, and white stucco.

TOUR PROGRAM - A FULL DAY DISCOVERING THE CLASSICS OF PALERMO

1st STOP - ROYAL PALACE AND PALATINE CHAPEL

The Royal Palace, now the seat of the Sicilian Parliament, stands majestically on one of the oldest areas of the city. On two floors illuminated by the light filtering through the cloisters, the royal rooms and the Palatine Chapel, founded in 1143 by the Norman King Roger II, open up, covered with mosaics and marbles, crowned by an intriguing Arab wooden ceiling.

2nd STOP - CATHEDRAL

Rising on the ashes of an ancient mosque, the Cathedral enchants at first sight with its splendid facade, an expression of Arab-Norman architecture with Gothic-Catalan inserts. The interior, modified in the late 18th century, houses the superb royal tombs and a rich treasure.

3rd STOP - QUATTRO CANTI

The Quattro Canti, built at the beginning of the 17th century, celebrate fidelity to kings and saints, in the flow of rivers and seasons. Each canto has its own story.

4th STOP - PIAZZA PRETORIA

A stage whose backdrops are the City Palace and two noble residences. The protagonist is the scenographic and mannerist Fountain of Shame, with the side of the Church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria in the background.

5th STOP - PIAZZA BELLINI

It takes its name from the 18th-century theater on the west side. On high podiums stand three splendid churches: the Church of San Cataldo and the Martorana, iconic elements of the UNESCO Arab-Norman itinerary, and the baroque Church of Santa Caterina, a triumph of marbles.

6th STOP - CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DELL'AMMIRAGLIO • LA MARTORANA

Founded by Admiral George of Antioch around 1140 and transformed over the following centuries, it is a place where Norman mosaics blend with Baroque frescoes and marble decorations, creating a magic that leaves one speechless.

7th STOP - ORATORY OF S. LAWRENCE

An oratory hall, where the confraternity of St. Lawrence used to meet, an elegant work by the stucco master Giacomo Serpotta. In his skilled hands, the white stucco transforms into marble.
